Description: English III provides the background necessary for mastering more complex skills needed in English IV. Students strengthen their composition skills by writing and studying literature. They are introduced to American Literature in units on short stories, a play, and a novel. They receive instruction in speaking and listening, writing and reading, group work, problem solving, decision making, and information gathering.

Description: English IV is a comprehensive study of English Literature and the various forms of writing. All students who take this course should be prepared to write almost every day. Description: This course is offered as a preparatory class for AP English.  The reading will focus on The Iliad and The Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid, the King James Bible, Greek Mythology and Drama, Shakespeare, and other classics from World Literature.   To fully understand and appreciate British and American Literature one must have a solid background in the Greek, Roman, and Judeo-Christian Classics.  This course aims to provide that background while introducing students to literary analysis and writing about literature.


 

 

 

 

                       

 

AP ENGLISH

PREREQUISITE: Teacher's Approval
CLASS LEVEL: 11th or 12th
Description: This course is designed to train college bound students to successfully deal with multiple genres of literature. Reading for this class will be assigned from a class list of classics.  The class is also writing intensive.  A standardized national exam is offered for college credit at the end of the course, the fee for which is about $80.  Get the required summer reading list from the AP teacher.

 

 

 

 

 

                        


Reading Proficiency (9/10 & 11/12)

Description: This course focuses on development of reading skills, and vocabulary for success across the curriculum, with an emphasis on optimizing brain function.  Students will use the Reading Plus program to increase reading comprehension and speed.  The course will also help students earn reading points for their regular English class.  Additionally, students will learn strategies for reading a variety of academic and technical texts.

Description:

Description: Art II is the study of the elements and principals of design combined with an increasing emphasis on quality, difficulty and creativity of assignments. Media experienced in Art II include: two-dimensional-drawing, painting, commercial design, three-dimensional-functional ceramics, sculpture and crafts.

Description: This class is intended for students wishing to continue developing their skills for college, or vocational fields requiring artistic skills or backgrounds. This may or may not include commercial art, advertising, fine art, art education, fashion design, interior design, graphic design, computer imaging, technical illustration, or many other vocations requiring a feeling for color and design. Advanced art students may also wish to develop artistic skills and talents for future leisure time activity. Special emphasis is placed on producing show quality work and portfolio preparation for those seeking entry to technical schools, college scholarships, or job applications in related fields. Students enrolling in advanced art will be somewhat self-directed with a high degree of self motivation. Minimum requirements include: one  two-dimensional work in a drawing media; one two-dimensional work in color media; one three-dimensional work; one work using the computer as a tool; and one self- portrait in any media. The student will maintain a sketch book throughout the school year.

Description: This class is open to advanced art students wishing to devote a larger block of time to their work. Requirements are the same as advanced art with greater emphasis placed on craftsmanship and amount of work. Drama/Theatre Tech.

Description: In this course we will study plays, acting and stage movement and history of the theatre.  We will also focus on the hands-on aspects of the theater, looking at lighting, sound and set construction and design.  We will help build the set for the Musical and the All School Play and assist with make up, costuming and set painting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

                  
Encore/Jazz Band

Description: Encore will consist of 12-16 advanced singers chosen through auditions.  Auditions will consist of singing "America" in several different keys, sight- reading, and tonal memory.  Encore will perform a wide variety of music including conventional choral literature, pop, jazz, swing and show choir music.  Choreography is added to music when appropriate.  A performance wardrobe is required of each member.  This ensemble sings at all scheduled high school concerts, Small Group Contest, and various community events.  A Band/Choir trip is planned every other year.  Fundraising opportunities are provided. 
Description: Jazz Band will meet during this time as well with Mr. Henderson.  Mr. Henderson and Mrs. Norris will arrange a schedule in which students who are involved with both classes have the opportunity to rehearse and participate in both.  One hour of credit will be given to everyone regardless of whether they are in encore, jazz band, or both.

 

 

 

 

                


MIXED CHORUS

Description: Mixed Chorus is open to any SCHS student with the desire to sing.  Music learned and performed will be selected to develop skills in vocal techniques, sight-reading, intonation, harmony, part-singing, and diction.  The choir will sing at all scheduled high school concerts and Large Group Contest.  A performance wardrobe is required.  Males wear black pants, black dress shirt, and black shoes and socks.  A white windsor tie is provided.  Females wear knee-length black skirts, and all-white (school appropriate) blouses.  Performances are a mandatory part of the requirements for this course.  A Band/Choir trip is planned every other year.  Fundraising opportunities are provided.

Description:

VOCAL TECHNIQUE

Description: Vocal Techniques is a class for the singer who wants to study the instrument of the voice more intensely.  Throughout the course, singers are assigned contest literature to prepare for solo contest in April.  Through preparation of the songs, the singer will strengthen vocal skills such as diaphragmatic breathing, phrasing, interpretation, diction, intonation and tone quality.

 

 

 

 

                        


BAND

CLASS LEVEL: 9th/12th
Description: Band is a performance-based class. Class time is spent preparing music for performances done outside of the school day. The first nine-weeks involve marching band and pep band for football games. After completion of football season, the band works on concert music in various styles for the remainder of the school year. The band also continues to perform as a pep band for boys and girls basketball games. During the spring, there are opportunities for interested individuals to perform solos or with a small ensemble. The band performs publicly approximately 20 times per year, including four home concerts, contests and pep bands.

Description: Percussion ensemble is a class dedicated to learning and performing music from the ever-growing library for percussion instruments.  Students will perform on a wide variety of percussion instruments and will also serve as the percussion section for the concert band during the spring.  Performance requirements will include at least two concerts as well as music contest.

Description: Biology II is a continuation of the Bio I program in that the same textbook is used.  Bio II students should have a good understanding of basic biology concepts as very little time will be given to review those ideas.  The focus of Bio II includes invertebrate and vertebrate studies, plant studies, and human morphology.  Each quarter, students will be required to do a project and/or write a paper based on independent study or laboratory research.  Students who plan a vocation in any of the many fields associated with biology are encouraged to take this class to help them prepare for their chosen vocation.

Description: Chemistry II is intended primarily as a course to give the student an in-depth and extended review of Chemistry I.  Any student considering a major in any science or medical field should consider this course a must.  This course includes an introductory unit in organic chemistry.  The organic unit is approximately 10 weeks and covers the occurrence, classification, synthesis, and major uses of the hydrocarbons.  Chemical bonding and molecular shapes are also covered in depth.  Laboratory skills are emphasized in selected experiments essential to an understanding of course concepts.

Description: Physics is definitely a college prep course. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding of how things work in nature and problem solving.  Topics include a thorough coverage of Newtonian Mechanics (speed, acceleration, force, vectors, projectile motion, energy, and work). This course also includes sections on atomic theory, waves, sound, light, and electricity.  Approximately 35-40 experiments are included with emphasis on techniques for doing science investigation.  Mathematics and problem solving are integral parts of this course in preparation for college physics.  This class is required for the board of regents scholarship consideration.

Description: This course emphasizes algebraic expressions and forms, especially linear and quadratic forms, powers and roots, and functions based on these concepts.  Students study logarithmic, exponential, polynomial, and other special functions both for their abstract properties and as tools for modeling real-world situations.  Geometric ideas are used throughout the course.  Problem solving skills and applications of algebra are emphasized.  Each student must have his/her own scientific calculator for Algebra II.

 

 

 

 

                               

GEOMETRY

CLASS LEVEL: 10th/12th
Description: The main goals of the course are the development of problem solving skills and their analysis of geometric figures in a plane and in space.  The course of study includes lines, points, angles, reflections, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruence and similarity of triangles, circles, polygons, and solids.  Some coordinate graphing and an introduction to trigonometric ratios are also included.  Construction using compass and straight edge are taught—each student must have his/her own compass, protractor, straight edge, and a scientific calculator.  This course may be taken the same year as Algebra II.  There is a strong emphasis on graphing, equations, and solving equations from Algebra I.  Homework should be expected almost every night.

 

 

 

 

      



ADV. MATH & TRIGONOMETRY

Description: This course is designed to be the final high school mathematics course before college for senior students or a prerequisite for juniors planning to take Introduction to Calculus as seniors.  For students considering science, mathematics, engineering, or related majors, this class is a must.  Included are enough trigonometry to constitute a pre-calculus course in trigonometry and the circular functions.  Statistical and algebraic concepts are included, as well as a preview of calculus in work with functions and limits.  Scientific calculators will be used extensively and are required for all students.

 

 

 

 

         



INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS

Description: This course is designed to take a look at the current issues facing the world today.  Students will be examining the issues from a variety of resources including Newsweek, local papers, and national news from the television.  The students will be engaged in a variety of activities to study the issues in more depth.  Some of the activities include in class debates, power point presentations, speeches, and research papers.  This is an excellent class to make students aware of what is going on in the outside world.

Description: In a participatory democracy, such as the United States, it is the responsibility of citizens to be actively involved in the decision making process of the nation. Students will study the why and how of decisions being made by consumers, business, and government. Through the usage of current newspapers, magazines, and news programs, many aspects of the free enterprise system will be studied. This course will help students analyze their economic decisions. Description: Our culture owes a great deal to the ancient world. We will trace the events and ideas that have impacted Western Civilization from the beginning of man through the Napoleonic Era. By tracing the political, economic, and cultural issues of each historical period, we will be able to understand some of the forces that influenced the historical development of the Western World. Description: World Geography uses both topical and regional approaches to probe the relationship between the land and people who inhabit the world. The topical approach is used to teach the basics of geography, map, and globe skills. A sequence of lessons presents and explains such geographical concepts as latitude, longitude, map projections, different types of maps, and how information is presented by maps and atlases. Description: This one year class involves numerous types of power plants and their theories of operation, parts identification, evaluation, and replacement procedures.  The first part of the term, students will disassemble, evaluate, repair, and reassemble two Briggs and Stratton engines.  All skills used pre-testing, measuring, repairing and replacing parts, and identifying specifications can be transferred to future situations.  Basic auto and farm machinery maintenance are part of the laboratory class along with electricity, electrical motors, efficiency, plumbing, and hydraulics.

Description: This class is designed around the idea of developing numerous construction skills using all types of material as students assemble and construct their own as well as group projects.  All resources are managed as efficiently as possible.  To manage time, students prepare working drawings prior to any construction.  To manage costs, students figure a bill of material prior to any purchasing.  Numerous skills are developed and fine tuned as students sharpen, repair, and maintain hand tools, power tools, and machinery.  While using all of these devices while constructing projects, students learn skills in carpentry, drafting, accounting, cold and hot metal work, mig and arc welding, plumbing and painting skills.

Description: It is a state requirement that all high school students have P.E./Health in order to graduate from high school.  It is recommended that this class be taken as a freshman.  Students must have a doctor’s permit to be exempt from this class requirement.  The P.E. curriculum is designed to provide young adults with the knowledge and skills needed to engage in a physically active, healthy lifestyle throughout life.  Three areas of focus in the course include: Health-Related Fitness, Lifetime Physical Activity, and Health/Wellness Concepts and Skills.  Examples of activities which may be covered are:  volleyball, basketball, soccer, archery, tennis, flag football, weight lifting, and other team sports and recreational games.

Description: Provides a real life training in the area of information dissemination.
This class will deal with:

  1. Creating and posting information on the school TV Station.  The Student will be responsible for gathering information about school related activities and posting these on the School Channel 12, using character generation software and a computer.
  2. Creating a newscast promoting the students and staff of USD 466.  This newscast would resemble the news show, 60 Minutes, and/or Dateline, as seen on commercial television.  The Student would be required to research/investigate their subject(s), write appropriate copy, produce, direct, film, and report the show’s content.
  3. Creating a sportscast with play-by-play responsibilities, direction, camera work, and production, and/or reporting summary of athletic contests.

Description:
The course is designed to provide training in leader and group skills needed by students for success in school and extracurricular settings.  Among the skills identified are:  conflict management, goal setting and prioritizing, problem solving, scheduling, motivation, leadership styles, project planning, communication, and evaluation.  Some time is provided for students to work on activities in membership groups.  Involvement in some school activities is expected, and a community service component is part of the course.  Grades are based on objective and subjective examinations; class participation; material collections; leadership performances; personal and instructor evaluations; the service component.

Description: For students to be eligible to enroll as an aide, they must have scored proficient or above on their state reading and math assessments given their 10th and 11th grade years.  Being an aide does NOT mean that you will have a study hall.  You are expected to report to your aide position, ready to do your assigned duties and/or whatever your supervisor has planned for you for that day.  You may only have 1 aide period each year.

Description:
Students who wish to learn more about the activities and duties of a teacher on a daily basis are good candidates for elementary school tutors.  Students must be responsible and reliable as the teachers and young children depend on them.  Elementary school tutors will be graded on their attendance and their cooperation with their teachers.  The duties of an Elementary Tutor will be helping elementary students with reading skills on a daily basis. Description:
